Palate fatigue - reminder to give your outfits little rest
simple and easy looks to remind yourself about before rushing into spring wardrobe buys
The other night I’ve had a light-bulb moment. I was reading about wine tasting, with a glass of red in my hand, and came across section talking about palate fatigue. It happens when taste buds get over-simulated and tired during the wine tasting. To clear the palate, recommended foods are: bread, mild cheese, apple and sparkling water; pretty much very basic and unpretentious foods. Obviously you can choose to ignore it, but in order to have the best experience of wine tasting you should give your taste buds a little rest in the process. That’s when it came to me, shouldn’t we give our style a little rest now and then, to enjoy fashion more?
Time in between the seasons always feels a bit overwhelming. Just when you thought you’ve managed to get into routine, here comes the spring collections snowballing all at once. Winter coats feel a bit tired now and spring isn’t coming fast enough and struggle to come up with any new outfits that excites you is real. Every time I start feeling that way, I turn back to those time tested dressing formulas for a few weeks to clear my mind. In my head, fashion is here to bring joy and happiness, but in this day and age, with countless inspiration, it is easy to get overstimulated and turn the joy into something else. Remember iconic “fashion stole my smile” t-shirt Victoria Beckham wore? Well it is still for sale and more relatable than ever.

And that’s why I wondered out on one glorious Saturday morning dressed in my most basic uniform and continued in this spirit for a few weeks, being as least creative as possible with my looks. Do I feel healed and inspired again? It’s not a complete magic, but yes, giving myself time to think gave me back my stride and I definitely have a better idea of what I want to add to my wardrobe this season. Just remember that you don’t need to make every day outfit count or look your best, just enjoy life, there’s so much to it: quality time with your loved ones, perfect cup of coffee, good book and good workout, cooking good food, I could go on and on. But conclusion is, it’s good to take breaks, not only in day today activities, but the fashion too. And for as long as it needs be.
